Student & Family Expectations

Every student is expected to approach b’nei mitzvah to the best of their abilities and we will meet them where they are. Consistent participation in tutoring and other sessions is necessary in order to ensure that your child is prepared and confident at their service. While we understand that life is very full for everyone, we invite families to prioritize b’nei mitzvah preparation in order to ensure the best possible experience for your child and family.

Attendance and completion of assignments

• Attend Goodman Center for Jewish Education (GCJE) through all of 7th grade, including 7th grade class

• Attend all tutoring sessions

• Practice and complete assignments between sessions

• Design and implement a Mitzvah Project

• Prepare a d’var torah with your officiating rabbi (includes sessions with rabbi and writing at home)

• Attend rehearsal with your officiating rabbi

Participation in services and workshops

• Attend at least five Friday night Shabbat services (6:15 pm) or Shabbat morning minyan services (9:30 am)

• Attend 6th Grade Yad Workshop and B’nei Mitzvah Family Workshops (see Timeline below for details)

• Lead a part of NSCI’s communal Kabbalat Shabbat service on the Friday night a week or two before your b’nei mitzvah service

Behavior and treatment of staff

North Shore Congregation Israel is committed to helping make the b’nei mitzvah process a meaningful and memorable experience. Our entire staff, including our clergy, our religious school faculty and tutors, our administrators and our maintenance staff, are involved and available to support you. We expect families to honor this commitment by being respectful in how they communicate and interact with all NSCI staff, both in person and by phone/email. We appreciate your partnership in creating a positive and respectful environment for all in the NSCI community.
